Copyright infringement can result in civil or criminal penalties. In most cases, such as Napster, the case is a civil copyright lawsuit.  However, recent extensive arrests for copyright piracy may result in fines and jail sentences.

   The statute of limitation for civil cases of infringement is 3 years and, for criminal cases, it is 5 years.
