When Copyright Starts
Copyright in a work created after January 1, 1978, subsists from its creation... 17 USC Sec. 302
All original works created after 1/1/1978 are protected by copyright as soon as they are fixed in some tangible form, unless for some reason they are placed in the public domain or are otherwise not copyrightable (such as U.S. government works). Some portions of a work, however, may not be protected.
