Month of Signals

January ends with four warnings blinking red.

Democracy: January 6 is being rewritten in real time. Rioters are defendants; architects are pundits. States sharpen the tools that failed last time and call it reform.

Pandemic: Omicron raked through hospitals and schools. Exhaustion became policy. The message shifted from prevention to inevitability without admitting the difference.

Economy: Prices climbed while essentials stayed scarce. Workers gained leverage in some sectors, but gains were eaten by rent and fuel.

Ukraine: Troops massed at the border, testing whether Washington can deter without bluster or drift into another war by inertia.

These are not separate stories. They are one: brittle systems, delayed decisions, and leaders who treat time as infinite. February won’t reset anything. It will measure whether anyone learned from January beyond crafting better talking points.
